Today, on June 10, an event dedicated to the Michigan-Latvia Partnership anniversary took place at Riga International Airport, during which US Air Force close air support aircraft “A-10 Warthog” was refueled in flight by US aircraft “KC-135”.
Aerial refueling was observed by the Minister of Defence Raimonds Vejonis, Michigan National Guard commander Major General Gregory Vadnais, as well as the Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassy Riga Sharon Hudson-Dean and other prominent officials from Latvia and abroad.
“The exercise “Saber Strike” is an excellent opportunity to enhance the cooperation and interoperability with allies and partnering countries,” emphasizes General Frank Gorenc, US Air Forces in Europe and US Air Forces Africa commander. “Training together with allies and partners demonstrates that we have a common goal – a united, free and safe Europe.”
The „KC-135” have been performing aerial refueling for US Air Force aircraft for more than 55 years.
The National Armed Forces and Michigan National Guard have been cooperating closely since 1992, organizing military training for soldiers and implementing other partnership projects.
One of the best examples of cooperation is US support in training Latvian joint terminal attack controllers and joint fire observers, who have been trained and certified in compliance with US regulations.
