Today, on May 17, at around 6:00 a.m., the National Armed Forces informed the public about a possible threat to Latvian airspace in the municipalities of Alūksne, Balvi, Krāslava, Ludza, and Rēzekne.

The National Armed Forces immediately activated the air defense units deployed in the region, which moved to the indicated location and took up positions. Fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic air policing mission were also activated.

The National Armed Forces confirm that one unmanned aerial vehicle entered and later exited Latvian airspace. Around 8:00 a.m., the National Armed Forces announced that the threat to Latvian airspace in the municipalities of Alūksne, Balvi, Krāslava, Ludza, and Rēzekne had ended.

Together with NATO allies, the National Armed Forces continuously monitor the airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to potential threats. The National Armed Forces have strengthened air defense capabilities along the eastern border by deploying additional units.

As long as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, similar incidents involving foreign unmanned aerial vehicles entering or approaching Latvian airspace remain possible.
