From September 1 to 12, the NATO strategic-level exercises STEADFAST PYRAMID and STEADFAST PINNACLE 2025 took place at the Latvian National Armed Forces Joint Headquarters in Riga. The exercises brought together more than 50 commanders and senior staff officers from nearly 20 Allied nations. Their aim was to strengthen knowledge of operational planning and command within NATO’s command and force structures.

The exercises were planned and organized by NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and conducted by the NATO Joint Force Training Centre (JFTC) under the leadership of Major General Bogdan Rycerski. Senior NATO leadership also took part, including General Alexus Grynkewich and Admiral Sir Keith Blount.

“Alliance forces need commanders who are well-versed in NATO’s planning system and skilled in applying operational planning. Today, these abilities are more important than ever,” emphasized Major General Rycerski, noting that the exercises directly address this requirement.

The STEADFAST training series has been conducted for over 30 years, preparing NATO commanders and staff officers for joint operations. STEADFAST PYRAMID focuses on strengthening staff officers’ support to commanders, while STEADFAST PINNACLE enhances generals’ and admirals’ understanding of leadership at the political, military, and strategic levels.

Since 2018, the preparation and execution of these exercises have been led by JFTC in cooperation with NATO experts and the Latvian National Armed Forces Joint Headquarters. Together, they ensure realistic scenarios and valuable knowledge exchange.
