Comprehensive national defense exercise “Namejs 2025” to take place in Latvia
From September 2 to October 8, Latvian National Armed Forces will conduct the comprehensive national defense exercise “Namejs 2025” all across Latvia.
The comprehensive national defense exercise ”Namejs 2025” will involve soldiers and National Guard members from all National Armed Forces units, including Conscription soldiers, reservists, and allied armed forces personnel.
The exercise will also train cooperation with the Crisis Management Center and the Civil Protection Operational Management Center, involving the State Chancellery of the Republic of Latvia, sectoral ministries and their subordinate institutions, national security agencies, several municipalities, and private sector partners. Their contribution will provide the necessary support for national defense needs, thereby strengthening Latvia’s comprehensive national defense system.
The exercise is organized in cooperation with the NATO Multinational Division North Headquarters and will involve allied troops from the United States, Estonia, and Lithuania, as well as personnel from the NATO Multinational Brigade Headquarters in Latvia, the NATO Force Integration Unit Latvia, and Task Force Latvia under the command of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Within the framework of Exercise “Namejs 2025”, the National Armed Forces will closely cooperate with the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) to ensure timely situational awareness, implement deterrence measures, and strengthen collective response capabilities in the Baltic region. This cooperation demonstrates the unity and readiness of JEF member states to act swiftly in the event of a threat, while also enhancing interoperability and refining operational procedures.
As part of Exercise “Namejs 2025”, cooperation is planned with military engineers from the British Armed Forces to develop engineering support capabilities and strengthen interoperability during joint training and operations conducted in Latvia.
The exercise will bring together approximately 12 000 Latvian and allied soldiers and National Guard members.
In September, as part of the comprehensive national defense exercise “Namejs 2025”, the National Armed Forces will conduct mobilization training. These exercises will be organized within the areas of responsibility of the National Guard’s 1st Riga Brigade and 2nd Vidzeme Brigade. The aim is to test and improve the integration of National Guard members and reservists into the Armed Forces’ combat structure. The training will assess the notification procedures for National Guard members and reservists, as well as their ability to be rapidly equipped with weapons and gear. In addition, the exercise will rehearse the deployment of mobilized personnel outside their regular unit locations and their involvement in carrying out various operational tasks.
In response to evolving security challenges, Latvia’s national defense system must be comprehensive, relying on the readiness of society and state institutions to overcome crises and remain resilient against external influence. A comprehensive national defense system encompasses not only the defense sector and government institutions, but also representatives of the private sector, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and the general public. Its goal is to establish an effective framework for planning, coordination, and partnership between state institutions, the private sector, NGOs, and citizens to ensure the functioning of nationally vital responsibilities. In practice, this system assigns each state institution clear tasks and a defined role in national defense.
The exercise “Namejs” is a regularly scheduled exercise that has been held across Latvia since 2014. The regular execution of military training plays a vital role in maintaining and strengthening the combat readiness of the National Armed Forces, which must remain at the highest level at all times. The Armed Forces must always be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to potential threats and to guarantee Latvia’s security. At the same time, strengthening cooperation with state and municipal institutions, as well as involving private sector partners from different industries, reinforces Latvia’s comprehensive national defense system.
