Military exercise "CAT 24"
Information prepared by Mechanized Infantry Brigade
From 1 to 4 May, the active phase of the NATO Enhanced Presence Battle Group in Latvia led military exercise "CAT 24" took place at the Ādaži Military Training Area. The exercise included a tank competition aimed at strengthening the integration and firepower of NATO allied forces.
The CAT 24 exercise involved crews of tank and combat vehicle units from Italy, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Poland, Spain and Germany. The exercise plays an important role in integrating unit tactics, techniques and procedures and sharing experiences that improve the execution of defensive and offensive operations.
The best performers were awarded with a historical trophy brought to Latvia from Germany.
Previously such activities were held as part of the “Iron Spear” military exercise, but this year the exercise has regained its historical name "CAT" (Canadian Army Trophy). The first tank competition called “CAT” was held in 1963 and the last in 1991.
Canada leads the NATO Enhanced Presence Battle Group in Latvia, which currently consists of more than 1 900 troops from Albania, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Canada, who are on duty in Latvia on a rotating basis.
The Battle Group has successfully integrated into the Mechanized Infantry Brigade, which participates in joint exercises with the National Armed Forces, thus improving interoperability with regional allies. The Battle Group also regularly organizes and participates in international military exercises.
