NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia to participate in Estonia's largest military exercise “Spring Storm 2024”
From May 6 to 21, the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia will participate in Estonia's largest annual military exercise, “Spring Storm 2024.” The primary goal of the exercise is to strengthen cooperation with allies under NATO command.
“Spring Storm 2024” is part of the second phase of NATO´s exercise “Steadfast Defender 24” which is NATO´s largest exercise in years. This phase of the exercise will focus on the deployment of NATO allied forces across all domains, emphasizing alliance unity. The participation of the battle group in these exercises demonstrates readiness and reinforces NATO's commitment to protecting Latvia's security, stability, and territorial integrity.
Over 14,000 participants from 13 NATO member countries will participate in the exercises, using 300 different types of armored vehicles.
The NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia currently includes over 1,900 soldiers from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Canada, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and North Macedonia, strengthening Latvia's defense. In addition, Iceland deployes a civilian specialist to the Battle group.
Notice to residents
During the military exercises, military transport columns will move along the A1 road between Ādaži and Ainaži, which may cause temporary traffic disruptions.
The National Armed Forces kindly request understanding for these activities, but the aim of the exercise is strengthening national defense and NATO collective security.
