The spring phase of the military training cycle NAMEJS 2022 in Latvia is nearing completion. The cycle began on 18 April with the arrival of the US cargo ship ARC Defender in Liepaja, supplying more than 350 military and support equipment to the U.S. Armed Forces.  The final step is a military demonstration and a   Distinguished Visitors Day (DV-Day) on 27 May in the Ādaži training area within the framework of the exercises Summer Shield and DEFENDER-Europe. The military leadership of Latvia, USA and other allied countries will attend the DV-Day.

The Summer Shield exercise is led by the Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade, with the participation of several other regular forces and the National Guard.  Other participating troops are from members of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Latvia, in addition to military units from Denmark, Lithuania, UK and the U.S.

Exercise Summer Shield is a part of a large-scale multinational U.S. Army-led exercise DEFENDER-Europe 22 running until 27 May in Latvia.  The exercise involves joint training of national units and Allies in tactical tasks, integrating air and ground operations with indirect fire support.

The various phases of DEFENDER-Europe take place from 28 February until 17 June. They are mutually synchronized in Latvia and 12 other European countries, training and improving a full range of military operations with the deployment of a large number of personnel and military equipment to training venues by air, land and sea.

Exercise DEFENDER-Europe is long-planned and led by the U.S. Army Europe and Africa. In total, more than 33,000 troops from 22 Allied and Partner countries take part. The aim of this ambitious exercise is to improve the interoperability of U.S. and European military units in joint air, naval, ground and special operations, demonstrating not only NATO's joint combat capabilities but also Allies' determination and readiness to deploy large military forces where needed on a short notice.

The spring phase of the NAMEJS 2022 training cycle combines a number of international exercises: DEFENDER-Europe, Knight Legion, Swift Response, Summer Shield and Hedgehog.

The autumn phase of NAMEJS 2022 in Latvia takes place towards the end of August and in September, combining several international exercises
