Multinational military exercise Summer Shield 2022, led by the Latvian Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade, takes place in the Ādaži training area from 16 to 27 May, 2022. The aim of the exercise is to improve cooperation between several NATO forces in performing tactical tasks by integrating air and ground operations with indirect fire support.

The main task of Summer Shield 2022 is to improve air-and-ground operations management procedures between units of the National Armed Forces, including the National Guard, and armed forces of several NATO Allies. Participants will improve maneuverability and combat support capabilities at the tactical level, as well as improve cooperation and interoperability between the Latvian Armed Forces and participating Allied countries.

National Guard and Air Force troops, Security Command, and Military Police will take part in  Summer Shield 2022, along with the Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade. Forces from the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia will participate, in addition to troops from Lithuania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

At the NATO Summit in Warsaw in 2016, NATO Heads of State and Government agreed to deploy multinational battalion-level battlegroups to the Baltic States and to Poland. Their mission is to strengthen NATO deterrence measures and bolster the Alliance’s collective defence. This summer marks the fifth anniversary of the battle group in Latvia, formally welcomed to the Ādaži military base on 19 June, 2017.

The multinational battle group in Latvia is led by framework nation Canada, and consists of more than 1,500 soldiers from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. The troops serve in Latvia on a rotating basis, and participate in exercises with the National Armed Forces, improving interoperability with regional allies and responding to challenges in the security environment.
