About National Armed Forces

The National Armed Forces is organized and armed part of the nation. In the active military service of the National Armed Forces soldiers serve voluntarily on the basis of law.
The main tasks of the National Armed Forces are to participate directly and actively in the protection and control of the land, sea and air territory of the State.
Various training and development opportunities are offered to soldiers of the armed forces. Soldiers have the opportunity to train and study in both military and civilian educational institutions, thus raising their qualification and promoting their self-improvement.
The National Armed Forces train qualified and professional instructors and officers who afterwards train new soldiers as best and as efficiently possible, providing the National Armed Forces with trained personnel capable of operating in any situation.
The National Armed Forces offer training opportunities not only for professional soldiers, but also for university students who have joined the National Guard.
The National Armed Forces participate in international operations upon the resolution, recommendation or request of international organizations of which the Republic of Latvia is a member or with which it cooperates, as well as at the request of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or European Union member states.
Since 1996, the National Armed Forces have been actively involved in international operations in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the documents of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
This is confirmed by the letters of gratitude received, the words of commendation given by high-level officials, as well as the interest of foreign armed forces in training, in the field of unexploded ordnance disposal, diver and marine tactics specialists in Latvia.
Professional service in the National Armed Forces offers social guarantees and stable salary for an extended period of time, as soldiers enter into a contract for professional service with the Ministry of Defense for five years.
Only the state language is used in the structural units of the National Armed Forces, except in cases where other laws or international agreements of the Republic of Latvia, as well as international agreements on the participation of the National Armed Forces in international operations or exercises provide otherwise.
