Multinational Division North based in Ādaži, Latvia, is taking part in the Multinational Corps Northeast led exercise “Griffin Lightning 2023”, running from March 2nd to March 10th. The exercise is happening across the Baltic region, and will also serve as Combat Readiness Evaluation for the division.

The background for exercise “Griffin Lightning 2023” has been planned in advance, and it will involve units training in a NATO Article 5 collective defence scenario.

“Through dedication and support of the Division staff, the framework nations of Denmark, Latvia and Estonia and other partner nations, Multinational Division North has increased its potential and capabilities since its founding in 2019. Exercise “Griffin Lightning” is the stage, where we will prove our ability to operate in a NATO Article 5 scenario, and that we are ready to fulfil our mission to deter and defend foreign attacks by going through the NATO led Combat Readiness Evaluation. The intent of all previous exercises have been to prepare Multinational Division North to assume this role and pass the evaluation, so I am confident we will succeed,” says Major General Flemming Mathiasen, Commander of Multinational Division North.

Background information:

Headquarters Multinational Division North was inaugurated in Latvia, Adazi, March 2019. The framework countries of Multinational Division North are Estonia, Latvia and Denmark.

The headquarters have been established to increase the defensive capability of the region, and complete the construction of a military command structure, in which the Allied forces in the form of Brigades that are subordinated to the Multinational Division North. Multinational Division North is under command of Multinational Corps Northeast Headquarters in Szczecin, Poland.

Currently, 13 nations are represented at the headquarters – Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
