From 1 to 5 May, the NATO Enhanced Presence in Latvia Battle Group-led military exercise "Iron Spear 2023" will take place at the Ādaži Proving Ground with the aim to integrate units of the National Armed Forces and allied nations in the execution of common tasks, to strengthen mobility, cooperation, interoperability and combat capability of the units in high-stress situations.

The Iron Spear 2023 exercise will involve the Land Forces Mechanised Infantry Brigade, the NATO Enhanced Presence in Estonia Battle Group and allies from the US Armed Forces. The training tasks will be performed by tank and infantry fighting vehicle crews.

On 2 May, a demonstration of force will take place during both daylight and dark hours. Combat munitions will be used during the exercise and the demonstration of force.
As already reported, at the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw, NATO Heads of State and Government endorsed an agreement on the deployment of multinational battalion-level battle groups in the Baltic States and Poland. The purpose of the Battle Groups' establishment and deployment is to contribute to NATO's deterrence and to strengthen the Alliance's defence. On 19 June 2017, a welcome ceremony for the NATO enhanced presence in Latvia Battle Group was held at the Adazi base.

The Multinational Battle Group in Latvia is led by Canada and consists of more than 1 500 troops from Albania, Canada, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and North Macedonia, who rotate duty in Latvia, participating in exercises with the National Armed Forces, thus improving interoperability with regional allies to respond to the challenges of the security environment.
