International Operations

Units of the National Armed Forces (NAF) participate in international operations in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, OSCE documents, Latvia’s international obligations and national legislation. Participation takes place upon the request or mandate of international organisations of which Latvia is a member or partner, as well as NATO or EU Member States.

The NAF contribute to peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations, military and training missions, as well as international rescue and humanitarian operations. Decisions on participation are taken by the Saeima or the Cabinet of Ministers, and in cases specified by law – by the Minister of Defence.

NAF units may be placed under the authority of an international organisation or a state leading the operation and participate in NATO and EU rapid reaction forces in accordance with applicable international agreements.

International operations involve professional service personnel who undergo specialised training prior to deployment. The Ministry of Defence ensures the necessary material, technical and financial support and may coordinate logistical support with allied states or international organisations.
